Ethiopia Breaks World Record for Tree Planting

GLOBAL TREE PLANTING SPOTLIGHT: 07.30.2019

We are honoured to feature the story of an Ethiopian-Canadian and her family who took part in this week’s amazing tree planting efforts in Ethiopia.

Lily Kassahoun and her family, got their hands dirty and planted some of the over 350,000,000 trees (yes you read that right) planted in a single 12-hour period throughout the country.

Lily Kassahoun is pictured here with her father Kassahoun Eshete, her sister and brother-in-law Mimy Kassahoun & Fasil Afele, and Kube.

Ethiopia’s tree cover was down to 35% at the turn of the century but currently sits at around 4% today. The massive effort is part of the national goal to plant over 4 billion indigenous trees throughout the country to assist in climate change mitigation specifically the fight against drought.

Thank you to Lily and her family for these wonderful pictures!
