The World Economic Forum's 1 Trillion Tree Campaign
“(E)ven the most radical scenarios for stopping climate change also call for so-called “negative emissions technologies,” something that can pull some excess carbon from the air—something like trees.”
— Adele Peters, Fast Company
The world is banding together to help combat climate change by planting 1 trillion trees. In one hour, a Turkish city planted 303,153 trees and similar campaigns are occurring in Peru, Zimbabwe, and even the US.
In addition to planting new trees, there are additional campaigns to protect forests that are currently standing. However, there are still, unfortunately, incentives in some areas for the continuation of clear cutting. Palm Oil is still in high demand and so is cattle farming - both requiring lots of space for their growth. Fortunately, companies are looking for alternatives to these products.
Our 2 million trees are a step in the right direction; and our own Mark Cullen is fighting for the preservation of Toronto’s oldest tree - a 300 year old oak and the Penryn Woodland in Port Hope, but there is still so much that Canada and Canadians can do to preserve and plant trees around the country.
“Trees obviously take a long time to mature. And so when you’re cutting down standing forests that are already contributing to carbon removal and replacing them with saplings and others that will take 40 years or more to mature, the level of removal just isn’t the same.”
— Jared Messinger, manager of the Global Restoration Initiative at the World Resources Institute
