Remembering Hervé – Keeper of Canada’s remembrance flame in Normandy

Hervé Hoffer, known for the paraffin lantern he would light very year at the beginning of June to hang from the balcony of his house on the coast of Normandy, France, suddenly passed on January 13, 2017.  Crowds would gather to watch Mr. Hoffer carry the lantern down to the beach and fully clothed, would walk out into the sea into the sea, where he tossed the flame into the English Channel.  Monsieur Hoffer was quoted as saying this was “a symbolic gesture to the Canadians who came from the sea, to give us back our freedom.”
